Understanding What a Poem Is
Have you ever heard someone speak in rhyme? Or read something on the page and thought it was poetic? Chances are, what they were speaking or writing was indeed a poem. A poem is a type of literature that uses words to express emotion and ideas. It typically has some kind of musical quality and can be written in any number of forms – from free verse to sonnets. In South Africa, poetry has been used for centuries as an expression of culture, history, and identity.
Different Types of Poetry
Poetry comes in many different forms – each with its own unique style and structure. Here are some common examples:
- Sonnet: A 14-line poem with a fixed rhyme scheme.
- Haiku: An untitled Japanese form consisting of three lines containing 5 syllables, 7 syllables, then 5 syllables.

Learning How To Read And Speak Poems
Once you understand the basics , learning how to read (and even write) poetry can be fun ! Here are some tips for getting started :
- Listen First : Before delving into the text , listen carefully to the poet recite their work . This will give you an idea of how they’re using language , cadence , tone , etc . Try repeating back what you hear so that you get used to speaking in poetic rhythms .
